The Gospe l of John
B. The Lord is put on trial before Annas, 18.12-27.
1. Jesus is brought before Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest, 18.15.
2. Both Simon and John follow Jesus, but only John enters the court of the high priest (note: John uses his influence with the servant girl keeping watch at the door to bring Peter into the court of the high priest, 18.16).
3. The accusation of the servant girl , and Peter’s denial: You also are not one of this man’s disciples are you?” “ I am not ,” 18.17.
4. A pregnant moment of angst and fear: Was Peter aware of what he had just done as he was warming himself by the fire with the servants and officers? , 18.18.
5. The high priest’s questioning Jesus “about his disciples and his teaching,” 18.19.
6. Jesus’ answer to the high priest’s questions, 18.20-2
a. The manner of Jesus’ proclamation of his claims: I have spoken openly to the world, in synagogues and in the Temple, where all Jews come together.
b. The openness of his delivery and content: I have said nothing in secret.
c. WHY DO YOU ASK ME? Ask those who have heard me; they know what I said .
