Gospel of John 09.vp

Session 7: Giver of the Spirit, High Priest of Heaven, the Shorn and Si lent Lamb 191

7. An officer strikes Jesus in the face : “Is that how you answer the high priest ?”, 18.22 (cf. 1 Pet. 2.21-23 – For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. [22] He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. [23] When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.) a. The deep irony: Jesus is the high priest of God, after the order of Melchizedek, Heb. 7.15-17 – This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, [16] who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal require ment concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. [17] For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” b. The people of Israel oblivious to his true identity, 1 Cor. 2.7-8 – But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. [8] None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

8. Jesus’ retort to the officer: If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong, but if what I said is right, why do you strike me? , 18.23.

9. Annas sends Jesus bound to Caiaphas the high priest, 18.24.
