1. Peter’s warming himself, the people’s accusation, and his further denial: “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” “I am not,” 18.25.
2. One of Malchus’s relatives asks Peter, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” Peter again denied it, and AT ONCE A ROOSTER CROWED (cf. 13.38).
3. The power of the Lord’s restoration: Peter the Denier of the Lord becomes Peter the Proclaimer of the Lord and his Kingdom .
a. The Lord is aware of our faults, Luke 22.31-32 – “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, [32] but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” b. God gives grace to overcome the test, 1 Cor. 10.12-13 – Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. [13] No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
D. Dialogue between Pilate and Jesus’ accusers, 18.28-32
1. Jesus led from Caiaphas’s house to the Governor’s headquarters (it was early morning), 18.28
2. “Swallowing camels, straining at gnats”: They didn’t enter the Governor’s place so they would not be defiled and could eat the Passover, 18.28b.
