3. Pilate’s entrance and question, and the people’s response: What accusation do you bring against this man? , 18.29; If he were not guilty of doing evil we wouldn’t have brought him to you , 18.30.
4. Pilate’s plea, and the Jew’s response: “Take him yourselves, and judge him by your own law,” “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death!”, 18.31 (a direct allusion to crucifixion , see 18.6).
a. Hypocrisy and utility: They knew that the law forbade this, but were using the law for their own purposes (cf. Matt. 23.2-4 – The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, [3] so practice and observe whatever they tell you— but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice. [4] They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger).
b. A fulfillment of Jesus’ own words: John 12.32-33 – “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” [33] He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
E. Jesus before Pilate, 18.33-38
1. Pilate enters his headquarters and called to Jesus : “Are you the King of the Jews?”
a. Is Jesus truly the King of Israel? : A large part of the Jewish accusation as to his deception and false claims
b. Theology matters! Their unscriptural view of Messiah closed them to the possibility of seeing in Jesus of
