The Gospe l of John

Nazareth the fulfillment of the ancient prophecies about the One who was to come , cf. John 1.41ff.

2. Jesus’ subtle and powerful question regarding Pilate’s question: Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” , 18.34.

a. Jesus is not Socrates : he doesn’t argue with you, he searches your heart to find the root of the issues!

(1) John 2.24-25 – But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people [25] and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

(2) John 6.64 – “But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)

(3) Heb. 4.13 – And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

b. Does Pilate know more than he is letting on?

3. Pilate reveals his ignorance: Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? , 18.35.

4. Jesus answers the first question: My kingdom is not of this world , 18.36a.
