Session 7: Giver of the Spirit, High Priest of Heaven, the Shorn and Si lent Lamb 195
a. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. (Who are the “servants” in this text?)
b. But my kingdom is not from the world , 18.36b.
5. Pilate’s surface question: So, you are a king, then? , 18.37a.
6. Jesus’ unequivocal answer: You say that I am a king = I am a king, just as you say , 18.37b.
a. For this purpose was I born and have I come into this world: to bear witness to the truth .
b. The philosophy of Jesus the Messiah: Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.
(1) He is full of grace and truth , John 1.14 – And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (2) He speaks the truth , John 8.40 – But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. (3) He does the truth, John 1.17 – For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (4) He is the truth , John 14.6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
7. Pilate’s doesn’t-quite-get-it-right question: What is truth? , 18.38.
