The Gospe l of John

F. Pilate returns to the Jews outside, 18.38-40.

1. Pilate’s objective response after his questioning of Jesus: I find no guilt in him, 18.38b.

2. Pilate defers to custom over justice : releasing one man for you at the Passover, 18.39a.

3. Pilate’s mistaken brownie-points maneuver with the Jews: So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews? , 19.39b.

a. Saw Jesus as an innocent person, probably not-altogether-there

b. Did not perceive him as a threat to the state: offered to release Jesus back to the people

4. The crowd’s response: “Not this man , but Barabbas !”, 18.40

a. In the end, mob mentality and fleeting loyalty wins out over true allegiance to Messiah .

b. Barabbas, the robber , is elected over Jesus, despite his words and works.

5. What does this decision reveal to us about the nature of authentic spiritual commitment to Christ?
