2. The soldiers break the legs of the two who were crucified with Jesus, 19.32.
3. Jesus already dead, so his legs are not broken, 19.33
4. A soldier pierces Jesus side, and blood and water come out (John’s certain eyewitness verification), 19.34-35.
5. The fulfillment of Scripture
a. “Not one of his bones is broken”: Ps. 34.20 – He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
(1) Exod. 12.46 – It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones. (2) Num. 9.12 – They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it. (3) Ps. 22.14 – I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast. (4) Ps. 35.10 – All my bones shall say, “O Lord, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?” b. “They will look on him who they have pierced:” Zech. 12.10 – And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
