C. Jesus and the Beloved disciple, 21.20-24

1. Peter’s curiosity (or sheer nosiness!) about John (note John’s narrative detail), 21.20

2. Peter’s word: Lord, what about this man ? , 21.21.

3. Jesus’ logic: If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me! , 21.22.

a. Matt. 16.24-25 – Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. [25] For who ever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” b. Mark 8.34-35 – And he called to him the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. [35] For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.”

c. John 12.26 – If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

4. The misunderstanding of Jesus’ statement about John: John will not die until the Lord comes back , 21.23.
