b. Unlike ancient Judaism’s belief that Moses would serve as their intercessor before God as he did to the people of Israel, Jesus asserts that he will act as their prosecutor and will testify against their rejection of Jesus as Messiah.
V. Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, John 6.1-21
A. Jesus provides a new meal on the eve of Passover, 6.1-15.
1. The coming of the Passover, and multitudes who followed Jesus, 6.1-4.
a. Jesus travels to the other side of Galilee, followed by large crowds who were intrigued by the signs he was accomplishing, 6.1-2.
b. Jesus goes up into a mountain with his disciples and rests; it is on the advent of the Passover celebration (i.e., approximately a half year passes between chapters 5 and 6), 6.3.
2. Setting the stage for his great miracle: “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?” , 6.5.
a. Jesus asks this as a test of the apostles , for he knew what he was going to do, 6.6.
b. Philip’s response: 200 denarii won’t buy enough for each to get a crumb, 6.7.
