The Gospe l of John

a. First-century prophetic sensibility believed Messiah (the Prophet) would act in the power of God against his foes like Moses and Joshua, setting Israel free from Roman oppression. Jesus reinterpreted through his life the meaning of Messiah (cf. Matt. 20.26-28).

b. The desire to come and take Jesus by force and make him king , 6.15

B. The new Moses crosses the new Red Sea, 6.16-21

1. The disciples begin their journey across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, 6.16.

a. Took off without Jesus: experienced fishermen, setting off during the dark

b. Jesus had not yet come to them, 6.17.

2. The change of situation in the sea conditions: the sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing , 6.18.

3. Jesus appears to the disciples, walking on the sea, 6.19.

a. They had rowed three or four miles .

b. Jesus appeared to them, walking on the sea coming near the boat (the disciples were frightened).

(1) An allusion to the Lord, Job 9.8 – Who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea.
