VI. Jesus and the Motives of the People, 6.22-29

A. The crowd’s realization of Jesus’ absence, and their search for him, 6.22-25

1. The crowds were tracking Jesus’ steps, 6.22.

2. Near the place where “they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks,” 6.23

3. The crowd’s apparent concern for Jesus, 6.25, i.e., “Rabbi, when did you come here?”

B. Jesus reveals their true motive, 6.26-29.

1. You seek me not because you saw signs , but because you ate your fill of the loaves , 6.26.

a. The crowd’s vision of Messiah : free food and the prospect of political deliverance

b. Jesus’ vision of Messiah : the Lamb of God come to take away the world’s sin, 1.29

2. Do not labor for food that perishes, but that food that endures to eternal life, given by the Son of Man who is sealed by God, 6.27.

3. The work of God: believe in him whom he has sent , 6.28-29.
