Appendix 1: Represent Teaching & Study Guide The Apostle Peter Peter: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

1. On the Rollercoaster with Peter (Mark 8.27–33) a. Peter’s Peak – “You are the Christ.”

i. When Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is, Peter makes the great faith declaration, “You are the Christ.” (Mark 8.29) ii. In Matthew’s version of this event, Jesus goes on to say, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 16.17) iii. The Point : Peter peaks when he represents God by proclaiming Jesus as the Christ.

Some illustrations of this point from the Book of Acts: • At Pentecost, Peter preaches to the crowds, proclaiming Jesus to be the Christ. Thousands come to salvation in response to his message! (Acts 2.36–41) • When threatened by Jewish rulers and authorities, Peter declares boldly that salvation only comes in the name of Jesus. When the leaders forbid them to speak of Jesus, Peter says that he must obey God and continues to proclaim the Gospel. (Acts 4.5–22)
