II. The Distinctiveness of the Teaching Ministry

It is a characteristic of Jesus’ teaching that it was not delivered in an academic lecture- type setting. It arose out of personal encounters, questions from enquirers, debates with the religious authorities (usually initiated by them), and the need to instruct his disciples in the light of his own imminent suffering and death, and of their role in continuing his ministry afterwards. ~ R. A. While preaching focuses on mixed audiences, teaching concentrates on building up disciples in Jesus Christ and bringing them to maturity .

2. Teaching is done both publicly and informally, oftentimes from house to house, Acts 20.20.

B. Teaching concentrates on fulfilling the teaching clause of the Great Commission.

1. We are to teach disciples of Christ to obey everything that Christ commanded us, Matt. 28.19.

2. Teaching ranks high in the gifts of the Spirit given for the upbuilding of the Church, 1 Cor. 12.28.
