One Focus: Empowering Indigenous Urban Christian Leaders

World Impact is a Christian missions organization that empowers urban leaders and partners with local churches to reach their cities with the Gospel. For nearly fifty years, World Impact has dedicated its resources to honor and glorify God and delight in him in communities of poverty. Our commitment is to see a healthy church in every community of poverty.

OUR MI SS ION World Impact empowers urban leaders and partners with local churches to reach their cities with the Gospel . According to The Center for the Study of Global Christianity, only 5% of the world’s church leaders are trained for ministry. And 81% of Christians live on less than $100 a day. Everything at World Impact is focused on training and equipping church leaders and workers who work in communities of poverty. We make resources affordable and accessible to as many as possible – affirming their ministry call. They are the transforming agents in their community.

THE MI N I STRY AND LEADERSH I P

Dr. Keith Phillips foundedWorld Impact in 1971, launching evangelistic Bible clubs in the inner city of Los Angeles, which spread across the country. As these children reached grew up, we saw the need to focus on the empowerment of local churches and their leaders. These churches equipping their workers can transform their neighborhoods. Today, Dr. Alvin Sanders, who has extensive experience in urban ministry, is the President of World Impact.

OUR UN IQUE ADVANTAGES

World Impact champions the ability of the urban poor to own and lead ministry, believing in the power of “grassroots” community insiders. We are kingdom-minded and trusted on account of our fifty years of experience in urban America. We leverage our staff to become trainers of trainers, reaching the world through local connections. When we train leaders in major US cities, many take that training back to their home country of origin.

4

OUR PROGRAMS Christ declared in Matthew 16.18 that on this rock he would build his Church, and that too is our focus. Since more people live in urban areas than ever before, this is the perfect moment in history to extend God’s truth, love, and grace by planting and building healthy churches. Our programs focus on urban community-oriented pastors and church workers who both desire to be trained and to train others.

THE OPPORTUN I TY BHAG (Big, Holy, Audacious Goal) A healthy church for every community of poverty 3HAG (Highly Achievable Three-Year Goal) To have actively served 700 partners, empowering 50,000 workers in communities of poverty We believe that God has positioned us for accelerated growth and impact – resulting in a significant opportunity to substantially expand God’s Kingdom to impact communities of poverty.

F I NANC I ALS To accomplish this strategy, we intend to spin off our legacy ministries of campgrounds, our elementary school, thrift store, and mobile health clinic. Current annual costs with legacy ministries is $10.8M, which carries an annual $1.5M deficit. Transitioning these ministries will result in a 31% reduction in annual costs once completed over the next three fiscal years. As a result, our annual operating budget projects to $7.5M by 2023 fiscal year end. We are organizationally positioned to meet and exceed our 3HAG without adding additional infrastructure costs. 5

www.tuminetwork.com/blog/empowering-the-urban-poor OUR HEART FOR THE LEAST OF THESE

Since our founding nearly fifty years ago, World Impact has spoken prophetically of God’s election of the poor (those rich in faith), and of the great opportunity of the evangelical church to plant healthy churches in communities of poverty (James 2.5). At a time when only 5% of the world’s pastors have received any formal theological or ministry education, we are convinced that a new generation of Christian workers can be equipped to reach to testify to the Gospel in their cities. Throughout our history we have lived in the communities we serve, ministered to the needs of the whole person, and sought to meet the needs of the whole family. Now we seek to empower healthy churches to bear witness and transform their own communities for Christ. Our investment in these churches will produce the highest return-on-investment imaginable: saved individuals, healthy churches, and transformed communities, all in Christ’s name!

OUR IDENTITY

OUR COMMITMENT

The Urban Ministry Institute is the training arm of World Impact, an interdenominational missions organization committed to planting a healthy church in every community of poverty. TUMI’s role in that vision is to provide churches and leaders with biblical resources that align with the orthodox faith and can be used to equip church planters and workers to advance the Kingdom, here in America and around the world.

Our commitment is to equip leaders and empower movements to see a healthy church in every community of poverty. We provide biblical, affordable, and culturally sensitive resources to denominations, church and ministry networks, and local churches. We seek to empower them to evangelize, disciple, and plant churches in neighborhoods where Christ is not known.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS

We partner with a variety of denominations, ministries, organizations, and foundations to equip leaders and movements in their own locales. Some of our partners include: • Prison Fellowship

• VanDaele Foundation • Evangelical Free Church of America • Charismatic Episcopal Church • Church of God in Christ

• DeBoer Foundation • Serving California • Stadia

OUR HISTORY

In 2020 TUMI celebrated its twenty-fifth year of operation. A brief overview of our history reveals our dedication to equipping qualified spiritual laborers among the poor.

Capstone Curriculum Completed Capstone is a 16-module training program providing seminary-level instruction specifically designed for emerging leaders to gain expertise in the historic orthodox faith and the most essential knowledge and skill learning needed for effective urban ministry and church leadership. Ten years in the making, Capstone includes four courses in each of four ministry areas: Biblical Studies, Theology and Ethics, Christian Ministry, Urban Mission (totaling 16 modules, 10,000+ pages of text, 64 hours of video, 41 required textbooks). Each module contains a Mentor’s Guide, a Student Workbook, and DVD teaching segments. The Spanish translation of Capstone was completed in 2006. Other translations are in progress.

TUMI’s Satellite Program allows churches, denominations, and other Christian ministries to equip their own leaders affordably, right where they are. First Evangel School of

TUMI Founded Since July of 1995 we have hosted

hundreds of courses locally at our Hope School of Ministry as well as nationally in conjunction with other ministries or organizations.

OUR BIG, HOLY, AUDACIOUS GOAL No institution on earth has greater ability to transform and impact society than the Church. It is the very Body and Bride of Christ, the pillar and ground of the truth, and the guardian of the Gospel. Our BHAG (Big, Holy, Audacious Goal) is to see a healthy church in every community of poverty. With the establishment of the church in that community, we have the potential to share the Gospel with neighbors, see personal and social transformation through its members, and to sense the presence of God’s Kingdom in its locale. Truly, nothing has greater impact for change than a healthy church established in a troubled community.

MEMOS OF UNDERSTANDING We partner with denominations, churches andministry networks, and local churches to engage in innovative and aggressive ministry projects aimed at reaching their cities for Christ. We join with them in Memos of Understanding (MOUs) designed to specify how our World Impact programs can be used to train and equip their church planters, pastors, and Christian workers to do effective ministry in underserved neighborhoods. Email MOU@tumi.org for more information. OUR ACADEMIC CONNECTIONS As a member of the Association of Biblical Higher Education’s non-accredited class of institutions, we affirm our voluntary non-accreditation status. We remain non-accredited to give full access of our seminary-level training to students who otherwise could not qualify for such instruction. We have formed partnerships with schools and seminaries which offer our graduates credit toward the completion of their own degree programs ( www.tumi.org/accreditedpartners ).

World Impact 2.0 With its fresh vision and resolve to see a healthy church in every community of poverty, World Impact’s commitment to transform communities together is needed like never before. TUMI’s role in that vision is strategic. As World Impact continues to explore ways to reach the cities of the world with the Gospel, TUMI will continue to produce affordable, solid resources to see churches planted in under-resourced communities everywhere!

Memos of Understanding (MOUs) We form unique relationships with partners to see God work in new areas and places. We signed our first Memo of Understanding with Urban Ministries, Inc., in 2013 to make our resources available through their denominational contacts.

Formal Partnership with Prison Fellowship Began This strategic partnership allowed us to launch a pilot program to bring TUMI from a handful of prisons to 32 California state prisons. Since then, the number of our sites in prisons and county/local jails has more than doubled.

Received Grant to Expand Our Satellite Network This grant allowed us to grow from 15 satellites to more than 150.

This book is a follow-up curriculum as well as a prerequisite to Capstone that is being used by pastors and leaders to disciple new believers.

OUR THEOLOGICAL COMMITMENTS

Since 1995 we have articulated and defended the formative teachings of the Great Tradition, the foundation of the Faith. Our theological commitments and mission-critical perspectives help to guide us in our creation and distribution of tools to strengthen churches serving the poor.

LIFE AND WITNESS OF THE CHURCH

12

OUR MISSION-CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES www.tumi.org/values As an evangelical ministry to the city, The Urban Ministry Institute seeks to integrate its spiritual formation, projects, andministries around a set of deeply held values that direct our efforts and shape our commitments. The following concise list represents the perspectives that we prize, those commitments and insights which enable us to pursue our goals and take advantage of our opportunities. Together, they represent a clear snapshot of our most deeply cherished truths, those ideas which inform and direct our actions and outreaches here. The Calling of God We do all we do fully assured that God is at this very moment calling, gifting, and anointing men and women in the city to represent his interests there, and are convinced that these chosen city leaders will be the vessels through whom he advances his Kingdom (Romans 8.28).

The Kingdom of God We are burdened to see the freedom, wholeness, and justice of the Kingdomof God embodied, celebrated, and proclaimed in church communities who show visibly what the“Rule of God”looks like when it is embraced by people who acknowledge Christ’s lordship (Matthew 6.33).

The Centrality of the Church We hold deeply the conviction that effective ministry takes place in the body of Christ, the agent of the Kingdom, where we facilitate the multiplication of healthy, reproducing urban churches, especially among the poor (1 Timothy 3.15).

The Power of Community We share a passion to employ innovative distance education programming to create and outfit a network of training centers in urban areas that provide excellent, affordable, and spiritually dynamic ministry education that is sensitive to urban culture (1 Corinthians 12.27).

God’s Election of the Humble We possess a certitude that God has chosen those who are poor in the eyes of this world to be rich in faith and to inherit the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him (James 2.5).

The Standard of Excellence We are held by the consuming belief that all effective, credible leadership development demands the requisite formality and rigor of disciplined excellence, with a flat refusal to be remedial or second-class (1 Corinthians 10.31).

The Explosiveness of Multiplication We are zealous to facilitate and empower urban church planting movements that share a common spirituality, express freedom in cultural expression, and strategically combine their resources to reach and transform the cities of America and the world (2 Timothy 2.2).

Fight the Good Fight of Faith is a single-volume course that serves as our official precursor to TUMI’s Capstone Curriculum seminary training, providing a solid introduction to the Bible’s major themes as well as the foundational principles of Christian discipleship.

Our Training Resources The Urban Ministry Institute concentrates all of its educational programming on ministering effectively among city populations, and all of our classes are taught in light of the needs of urban ministry. We believe that the rapid growth of cities around the world presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Church of Jesus Christ. The courses we offer are based on the Nicene Creed, which represents the essential core of our historic orthodox faith, affirmed through the Church’s history. Our Certification After completion of Capstone’s 16 modules, students receive a Certificate in Christian Leadership Studies from The Urban Ministry Institute. Other flexible certificate programs are available as well. Students typically finish their certificate in four years since they often work full- time jobs and serve as bi-vocational church leaders. We have several academic partners who will give credit to our students for the completion of TheCapstoneCurriculum .

The Capstone Curriculum is a 16-module training program, taught at a seminary level, which we specifically designed to serve as the most essential knowledge and skill learning necessary for

effective urban ministry and church leadership.

Foundations for Ministry Series courses are specially designed to help leaders grow in their knowledge of Scripture, theology, the Christian life, and practical ministry.

TUMI Events We host events to connect and network our partners. We design them to inspire our partners to do innovative ministry for Christ with those unable to afford traditional Christian leadership education. Visit www.tumievents.org to see our next scheduled events.

HARVESTERS

www.tumi.org/harvesters

Summary With the change in social contexts around the world, we believe that God is raising an army of disciple makers to minister to the broken right where they live. We are equipping thousands of workers to do effective ministry at a fraction of the cost and trouble of traditional Christian education. They can access our training without going into debt or leaving their home and ministry.

History God has ledWorld Impact through specific seasons of emphasis: fromUS inner-city evangelism, to discipleship training, from holisticministry to church planting. Today we empower urban leaders and partner with local churches to reach their cities with the Gospel.

The Problem Today Traditional training has many challenges . . . • Inadequate: Only 5% of the world’s Christian workers/pastors receive Bible training, and even if we filled every school, the number would only grow another 1%. • Too expensive: To equip 1missionary for every 100 unreached people would require 73 million workers at a cost of $3 trillion (rivaling the US budget)! • Excludedby admission requirements: Most emerging leaders do not qualify academically. • Inaccessible: Traditional Bible and seminary training is not offered in poor neighborhoods. • Culturally irrelevant: Much of traditional curriculum does not address challenges of the poor.

Our Better Alternative • TUMI multiplies qualified Gospel workers to serve in communities of poverty. • We own 25 years of experience in innovative urban poor Christian leadership development. • We equip pastors and church planters to serve Christ in places where traditional missionaries cannot serve. • While it can cost up to $100,000 annually to deploy aWestern missionary, we can train a Gospel worker for around $50 per month. • The Capstone Curriculum , our 16-course seminary-level program, is historically orthodox, practical, and geared toward oral learners. • We equip churches and networks to form satellites with a turnkey administration, having grown from 12 satellites in 2006 to 310 (as of April 2020). • We do consultations and design resources, events, and programming for denominations, church and ministry networks, and local churches. • We can resource God-called churches and their workers anywhere on earth, whether urban or rural, or from northern or southern hemisphere. • We empower churches and movements to provide tailor-made certification to affirm their leaders – church members, disciples makers, church planters, and others – who require formal recognition and training.

Our Partners: Those Reaching the Unreached World Impact’s strategy is to empower our partners to do pioneer missional outreach to those who do not knowChrist in communities of poverty. • Denominations: traditional church communions and associations • Church andMinistry Networks: specialized movements collaborating to win the lost • Local Churches: healthy congregations mobilizing for ministry • Sponsors: those supporters and donors who underwrite the cost of new outreach

Why Harvesters? Harvesters is the name we give to those sponsors who underwrite ministry projects designed to advance the Kingdom in communities of poverty. The ancestors of the evangelical missionary movement were “missionary societies” dedicated groups of believers, missionaries, and business- people who collaborated their experience and funds to reach peoples for Christ. We need sponsors to support strategic projects that will advance the Kingdom in new contexts.

Memos of Understanding

Exciting MOU Initiatives Underway Underwriting the valiant efforts of Gospel churches and their workers in communities of poverty represents the best return on investment for missions today. Through the generous support of our donors, our Harvesters, we can partner with Christian workers all around the world. Here are a few examples of how you can help: • Sponsor the printing of Fight the Good Fight of Faith for training prisoners in a closed country. • Sponsor the translation and printing of materials for evangelism, discipleship, and church planting (i.e., Bible Blossom Storybook and Storyteller’s Handbook , Fight the Good Fight of Faith , and On This Rock: A Church Planting Sampler ) in a closed country. • Sponsor the translation of the Capstone Curriculum into Romanian, enabling seminary training for leaders in Romania and Ukraine, and ultimately Moldova and Russia.

Memos of Understanding (MOUs) are an effective tool of collaboration to help our ministry partners to initiate and complete specific Gospel outreach efforts in communities of poverty. What do MOUs do? • They specify the terms of targeted outreach. • They represent the scope and purpose of a particular outreach. • They map out what we will need to trust God for in order to attain our shared goals.
